G. Robert "Bob" Wharton

G. Robert "Bob" Wharton passed away suddenly on Monday evening, June 1, 2015. He was born on December 6, 1948 to George Albert and Lois Jeffrey (Woodard) Wharton in Port Huron. Bob is survived by his wife, Laurel Moore, whom he married in 2007; his brother, Richard (JiaLi Wang) Wharton of Azle, TX; his daughter, Elizabeth Kroll of Muskegon; and 4 grandchildren. Bob was able to relax and enjoy four years of what he called "the good life" after retiring from General Dynamics in June of 2011. He was a graduate of Ferris State University. His professional pride and joy was developing the long recoil mechanism of the 105mm cannon now mounted on the Mobile Gun System of the Stryker vehicle. This work began while he was employed at ARES, in Port Clinton, OH, and culminated at General Dynamics in Muskegon. He had previously spent ten years at General Motors in transmission engineering. He was an avid and accomplished competitive rifle shooter, having achieved Master status in his 40's. After retirement, many of his summer weekends were devoted to traveling to rifle matches, where he nearly always placed in the top 3. He was also "Coach Bob" to the Junior members of the Muskegon Pistol and Rifle Club, as well as a member of the Board of Directors. Bob will be remembered as a genuinely nice guy who had an incredible mind, was honest to a fault, and had a twinkle in his eye. A memorial service will be held Monday, June 8, at 1:00 PM at The Lee Chapel, 6291 S. Harvey St., (231) 798-1100. Visitation with the family will be Sunday, from 2-4 PM. You may visit the family's online guestbook at www.sytsemafh.com In lieu of flowers, contributions in Bob's memory may be made to the Muskegon Pistol and Rifle Club, PO Box 128, Fruitport, MI 49415
